Ph.D. Student Jonggu Lee of Professor Maenghyo Cho’s Smart Structures and Design Lab has claimed the Excellent Paper Award in the 2013 KSCM Fall Conference held in the National Korea Maritime University from the 21th to 22th of November 2013 with the paper titled “Initial curvature influence evaluation of the shape change load of bistable composites”<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The above paper suggested the use of templates with initial curvatures to simply apply the given curvatures without the hassle of changing the lamination layers or angles of composites to change the critical load for shape change of bistable composites, showing through a numerical analysis the linear chance of the critical load number of bistable composites for a shape change. Through this research, bistable composite manufacturers can possibly predict and design the critical load and shape of a bistable composite without the hassle of complex analysis and manufacturing processes through a application of an initial curvature effect.

The research was done in collaboration with Ph.D. student Junghyun Ryu of Professor Kyu Jin Cho’s smart structures and design lab and Ph.D. student Seung Won Kim of the Bio-robotics lab.
