SNU Engineering Professor Byeng Dong Youn

It was revealed on the 7th that Professor Byeng Dong Youn of our faculty has won 2nd place in the 2014 PHM Data Challenge. This feat was achieved on the first participation of SNU in the competition. Professor Youn뭩 team plans to present the research results in an invitation to the IEEE PHM Conference to be held in June this year.

The PHM Data Challenge is an annual event hosted by the most prestigious international society among the Prognostics and Health Management Sector, the 멗EEE Reliability Society? The competition uses actual data and selects winners based on a team뭩 system operation prediction results.

This year뭩 assignment was to determine a fuel cell뭩 the State of Health (SOH) and the Remaining Useful Life (RUL). Professor Youn뭩 team analyzed the data through an equivalent circuit model and successfully solved the assignment by predicting the Nyquist factor.

This achievement is exceptional in a sense as all previous awards had been cleared by the US and Europe. Through this achievement, joint research offers had been made by the CALCE of the University of Maryland and an international recognition of the national PHM team has been achieved as well.

Professor Youn also has previous record of claiming the Best Paper Award in the PHM sector through a presentation of a journal related machine life prediction through suspension data. He is currently leading the nation뭩 PHM technology in machine system research such as wind generator, rotor and lithium ion battery systems.

Professor Youn added, 밒 give my thanks to students of the laboratory who participated in the achievement after competing with big labs from Europe and the US. I plan to continue my efforts in PHM research to increase Korea뭩 global competitiveness?
