SNU Engineering Professor Seung Jin Song (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) became the first ever Asian Chair of the IGTI, appointed by ASME on 1^st July 2014. Professor Song who has been working as a direct of IGTI for the past 5 years will now take on the role of non-executive president for 1 year.

IGTI is the most prestigious institute when it comes to the gas turbine sector, where it deals with gas turbines and other rotary energy generators (Wind Turbines, Steam Turbines, etc). The institute hosts an annual ASME ITI Turbo Expo where over 1200 journals are submitted and 3 thousand attendees are expected, along with 2~3 other international conferences. It also publishes 2 of the most influential journals in the gas turbine sector. Established in 1965, every president since then has been from Europe or the US, making this event the first time an Asian engineer to be appointed president.

Professor Song received his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering in Duke University, where he then went on to complete his doctorate in MIT Aerospace Engineering and has been working as a SNU Professor since 1999. Professor Song also won a multitude of medals including the Melville Medal in ASME, the Best Paper Award, along with the SNU Excellent Lecture Awards in 2002, 2006 and 2007. He also set the location of the 2016 ASME IGTI Turbo Expo in Korea, a first since for the previous 60 years, the expo had been monopolized by Europe and the US. Professor Song is currently recognized worldwide as a global authority in the gas turbine sector.
