Ph.D. student Je Sung Koh and Undergrad Sa-Reum Kim of SNU Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Professor Kyu Jin Cho’s team claimed the Compliant Mechanisms Award at the 2014 ASME IDETC/CIE 38th Mechanisms and Robotics Conference with research regarding self-assembling origami robots. With the research titled "Self-Folding Origami using Torsion Shape Memory Alloy Wire Actuators" the team presented the design and development of self-assembling origami robots driven with torsion shape memory alloy wire actuators. The research showed the development of technology that allows folding in both directions and showing the possibility of quick switches between 2 different shapes, overcoming the limits of current robots which could only turn into 1 shape. The research was recognized for its possible applications in the development of robots that could turn into 3 dimensional structures and the potential importance of the movement mechanisms of self-assembling, shape shifting robots.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
