Of the 800 freshmen in the SNU College of Engineering this year, at least 115 (14%) had been accepted to Medicine, Dentistry and Oriental Medicine in other schools and still picked the SNU College of Engineering.

Through a survey by the college of engineering during the freshmen orientation, 115 students responded “ I have been accepted to medicine, dentistry and Oriental Medicine in other institutes”. According to the college of engineering, 675 of the 800 students replied to the survey.

Despite the social phenomenon known as Engineering Avoidance, an “Engineering Revival” analysis has been made with the survey results, a significant amount of students picking engineering over medicine, dentistry and oriental medicine.

Of the students who took the survey, 103 students were accepted to medicine in other universities, 9 were accepted to dentistry and 3 to oriental medicine.

By colleges, SNU Medicine took the lead in the most overlapped acceptances, with 30 students, 3 being accepted to Yonsei Medicine, 2 to Korea Medicine. Outside of this, 1 was attepted to Yonsei Dentistry and 1 to Kyunghee University’s Oriental Medicine.

The organizer of this survey, Professor Suk-Won Cha of SNU Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, said “ The preference of medicine in Korea seems to have reduced over the years which is why we held the survey for the freshmen”
