We have to start thinking about making jobs

“When you meet each other 30 years from now, don’t compare how much money you earn. Instead, compare to how many people you give out income to.”

Said head of Research and Development of MOTIE Heui Jae Pahk (54, Picture Above) last 27th in a special lecture organized by the SNU Career Development Center to students, emphasizing on the importance of start-ups. A SNUMAE Professor, Director Pahk scribed a success legend when he started a display equipment production company “SNU Precision”, as the first laboratory venture, which now boasts an annual revenue of 100 billion won. From 2013, following the president of KT Chang Kyu Hwang, he became MOTIE’s Strategic Planning Director of R&D, overseeing research development policies as the national CTO (Chief Technology Officer).

On this day, Director Pahk told students to break out of the conventional mindset to find a job. He said, “Ever year, tens of thousands of youths have an under-productive competition to get into the pinhole of about 15000 job positions as MNC employees, government officials and others. Before you start worrying about how to get a job, start worrying about how to make one.”

He did not leave out advice for those in the graduates’ school as well. “During the financial crisis in 1997, when the whole nation was unstable, I decided to contribute to the nation through my own means by commercializing the technologies in the laboratories. Don’t just focus of churning out research papers and start thinking about how your research can be commercialized”, he advised
