△ Nepal Exchange Student Poudel Shiva Raj, whom we met in the SNU Institute for Global Social Responsibility (IGSR), introducing the contribution activities from this office.

“The kindness Koreans showed and the willingness to help the (Nepal) earthquake damages by young students really moved me. I too want to be a part of social contribution activities for developing nations.”

Mr. Poudel Shiva Raj who was employed in January by the SNU IGSR, a dedicated group for social contributions, showed his aspirations to work in developing countries as an expert in ‘appropriate technologies’. Appropriate technologies refer to the most appropriates technologies for a developing nation that may not necessarily be the latest.

Mr. Poudel Shiva Raj who was from a small village north of Kathmandu, Nepal came as an exchange student to SNUMAE in the second semester of 2013 and completed his Masters Course here. While there were foreigners working as professors or employees of SNU, Mr Shiva Raj was the first foreign exchange student to be officially employed at SNU. “Mr Shiva Raj, who has been active in international social contribution activities even during his time as an exchange student, adds meaning to SNU IGSR, a group that takes social contribution activities as work”, said SNU IGSR

Last June, Mr. Shiva Raj went to the Nuwakot Thanapati village to help with damage recovery activities (due to the earthquake in April) as a representative of SNU IGSR.

Mr. Shiva Raj was influenced by his guidance professor Sung-Hoon Ahn to join the SNU IGSR. He said ”Watching Professor Sung-Hoon Ahn work harder than anyone else to help a foreign country was the stimulus for me to actively participate in social contribution activities and help my home country. Professor Sung-Hoon Ahn, who taught me what to do to have a sustainable overseas volunteer activity, is my life’s role model”

He also said, “IGSR helps countries other than Nepal such as Vietnam, Laos, Phillipines and others through gifting the “light of hope” by visiting and installing solar panels and small hydroelectric generators. Providing the most vital technologies for regular people of developing nations can be a good social contribution activity.”

Working at the SNU IGSR helped Mr. Shiva Raj gain a more systematic perspective. “Back in my time as an exchange student, I only thought to research on appropriate technologies but now I see what would be the best help for developing nations, what students can learn from these social contribution activities, working together with external groups to give the best aid, and solving other deeper problems and work” said Mr. Shiva Raj with pride. As a conclusion he hopes to be able to “Provide sustainable technologies for developing nations instead of giving temporary attention to the people in need”
