Seoul National University’s Prof. Youn, Byeng Dong and his research team have partnered with Hyundai Motor Group and seven universities (Konkuk University, Sungkyunkwan University, Inha University, Korea University of Technology and Education, Hanyang University, GIST, and UNIST) to establish a joint research lab focused on developing PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) technology for predicting and preventing vehicle faults.

PHM technology is emerging as a crucial tool in the era of autonomous driving and electrification, enhancing vehicle system reliability by predicting and managing potential faults before they occur. This can reduce maintenance costs and improve safety as the complexity of systems increases.

The signing ceremony held at Seoul National University's Engineer House was attended by company officials including Hyundai Motor Company and Kia R&D Headquarters President Hee-Won Yang, Vehicle Performance Technology Center Director Byung-Hoon Cho, Vehicle Performance Deterioration Research Lab Research Fellow Dae-Woon Sung, and Hyundai ENGV CEO Oh Junghoon, as well as participating university officials including Seoul National University College of Engineering Dean Kim, Young-Oh, Department of Mechanical Engineering Prof. Youn, Byeng Dong and Sungkyunkwan University Prof. LEE, SANGWON

The participants outlined goals for developing PHM technology by 2027, focusing on creating hardware and software for vehicles, establishing a PHM platform, developing foundational technology, and designing a data and sensing strategy for each vehicle system. They also aim to optimize algorithms and processors and build PHM platform infrastructure. Emphasis will be placed on collecting sensor data and optimizing predictive algorithms to enhance fault prediction accuracy through embedded systems or cloud-based PHM platforms.

Hyundai Motor Company & Kia President Hee-Won Yang remarked, “PHM technology is key to managing the complex systems of the autonomous driving era. Through collaboration with domestic universities, we aim to strengthen our technological expertise and gain competitive advantage in leading the upcoming autonomous driving era.”
