Palm-sized mesoscale microturbomachinery are one of the emerging technologies in energy-related
areas. Potential applications encompass portable power source for leisure, micro turbo jet
engines for unmanned air vehicles (UAV) and mobile robots, air and fuel delivery system for
various types of small fuel cells, power-boosting device for solid oxide fuel cell, etc. The
palm-sized microturbomachinery spins above 500,000rpm to produce required pressure ratio from
the compressor, and reliable bearing system is a core technology to be developed. As system
sizes are reduced, increased surface area to volume ratio excludes liquid lubrication and
mandates development of gas-lubricated bearing system. An approach using silicon as a structural
material for the gas bearings constrains design features to solid wall geometry with limited
performance.
This seminar introduces a virtual design and manufacturing process of mesoscale flexure pivot
tilting pad and foil gas bearings made of metal with diameter of 5mm. Design speed is over
600,000 rpm with rotor surface speed exceeding 120m/s. Manufacturing involves a LIGA process, a
combination of X-ray lithography and electroplating. Virtual design studies involve time-domain
and frequency-domain modal stability analyses for accurate prediction of rotor dynamic
performance. Simulation studies indicate much higher potential of tilting pad gas bearing over
foil bearings.
Material issues related to the LIGA-processed mesoscale gas bearing will also be addressed.
Design features of the gas bearings that can be fabricated via LIGA process and their advantages
over precision-machined ones are discussed in terms of design flexibility and manufacturing
repeatability.
