1. 제 목 : Composites - Applications in Microwave Spacecraft Structures, and Biology/Biomimetics

2. 연 사 : Professor C.K.H. Dharan (University of California at Berkeley)

3. 일 시 : 2006년 6월 19일 (월) 오후 1시 ~ 2시

4. 장 소 : 301동 1512호

5. 내 용 : Composites have unique properties (zero coefficients of thermal expansion, selectable dielectric constants, electrical conductivity and high specific stiffness) that make them ideal candidates for antenna and microwave applications. The speaker will present his personal experience in designing and manufacturing large antennas and microwave components that have now had a long history of successful operation in space. These include the Viking and Voyager high-gain antennas which were the world’s first use of composites in space, and antennas and microwave components (phased array feeds, feed networks, ground planes, filters and multiplexers) for communications satellites. The design of these components to survive launch loads and perform over orbital lifetimes exceeding 25 years, as well as the problems inherent in the manufacture of precision composite structures will be discussed.
The second topic of this seminar relates to the application of composite concepts to the analysis of biological structures. The speaker will discuss his work on fracture initiation in compact bone subjected to dynamic loading. An example of this was seen in the recent tragic fracture of a race horse’s femur. Bone has traditionally been treated as a single phase anisotropic material. By modeling bone as a fluid-filled poroelastic anisotropic composite, the speaker will show how such types of failure can be predicted analytically and shown to occur experimentally in tests conducted in his laboratory. This will be followed by a brief discussion of current research on the motility of living cells as they interact with substrates containing variable and anisotropic stiffness gradients. If time permits, the speaker will also present details of a new course, Biomimetics - Engineering from Biology, he has developed at the University of California, Berkeley..
