1. 제 목 : On-Orbit Testing of the International Space Station - Challenges and Implementation
2. 연 사 : 김형만 박사 (Senior Technical Fellow,The Boeing Company.)
3. 일 시 : 2006년 4월 19일 (수) 오후 3시~5시
4. 장 소 : 301동 117호 세미나실
5. 내 용 : The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest earth-orbiting vehicle, whose on-orbit construction began in November 1998. The ISS is designed to operate at least 15 years in low earth orbit to conduct science and engineering projects as well as serve as a manned, living quarters. The ISS is unique because, unlike most manned flight vehicles, it has neither completed an extensive flight test program nor has been correlated to ground test data at the full-scale, integrated level since its structure cannot support itself in a 1-g environment. However, each ISS element undergoes extensive ground testing and model correlation in its launch configuration prior to flight, while structural verification of the integrated vehicle is performed on orbit.
An overview of the different types of on-orbit tests to support ISS structural verification will be presented. The discussion will focus on the major challenges in pre-test coordination and test implementation. The tests involve elaborate analysis and planning among a large number of specialists including: analysts, mission planners, and astronauts. The Shuttle Columbia disaster and further delay in Shuttle return-to-flight have placed additional obstacles for further structural verification. Future ISS test plans will be discussed.
