5. 내 용 :
Turbulence is ubiquitous, thus can be found everywhere. Understanding the
fundamental mechanism of turbulence would be greatly helpful in many areas of
science and engineering applications. One very powerful tool for investigation of
turbulence is numerical simulation using recent supercomputer. Turbulence, a
challenging problem for a century, now begins to reveal its secrets very slowly.
Particularly, among a lot of fundamental issues of turbulence, behavior of fluid particle acceleration shows a very interesting phenomena. Acceleration in turbulence is quite intermittent, which means that instantaneous acceleration about more than 100 times larger than root-mean-squared value is frequently observed. Recent experimental and numerical studies revealed that this intermittent behavior is closely associated with vortical structures which is a coherent rotating motion in the form of filament. This kind of behavior is very important in the prediction of laden solid particle dispersion as well as gas dispersion. Based on such a fundamental observation and relevant derivations, a simple numerical model for prediction of air pollution or particle dispersion can be formulated. This model can be used for real-time prediction of pollutant dispersion in the environmental emergency response system. This clearly shows a good example of fundamental research which can be directly applied to real engineering problems.
