The European Union is actively funding Grid research projects through the 6th Framework Programme and IST. Last September, 12 new projects were funded representing a combined 52 millions euros. Among these projects, CoreGRID is the only Network of Excellence (a new instrument offered by FP6) in Grid computing. It aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and Peer-to-Peer technologies. To achieve this objective, the Network brings together a critical mass of well-established researchers (118 permanent researchers and 163 Ph.D students) from forty-two institutions who have constructed an ambitious joint programme of activities. This joint programme of activity is structured around six complementary research areas that have been selected on the basis of their strategic importance, their research challenges and the recognised European expertise to develop next generation Grid middleware. It is funded by a European grant assigned to the CoreGRID NoE, for a duration of four years (starting September 1st, 2004). This presentation will introduce some EU-funded Grid projects and will give an overview of CoreGRID. CoreGRID relies on several national initiatives within the European Union among which there is the French ACI GRID initiative. I will give an update on the Grid'5000 project funded by the ACI GRID aiming at building a 5000 processors grid testbed
