Using real space projects for education of university students started in the early 1980's with programs at the University of Surrey, Weber State University in Utah, USA and others. Many nations started new small satellite programs through the University of Surrey including KAIST.These programs generally concentrated on microsatellites of 25kg or larger.

In 1999 the CubeSat was introduced a proposed pico satellite standard (1 KG)that allowed an international group of universities to build to a common size and common launch interface - the P-POD from California Polytechnic State University, USA.The first of these CubeSat type satellites were launched  on the Russian Eurockot in June 2003.

This launch had picosatellites from 1 US university, 1 Canadian university, 2 Danish universities and 2 Japanese universities. There are now approximately 60 universities working on CubeSat type satellites with a second scheduled Russian launch late 2004.

This presentation will cover a brief history of the student satellite programs as seen the United States.

It will then cover the uses of the picosatellites, some of their planned uses and view of potential and proposed real space mission for university students.
