Certain kinds of surfactant are used into air conditioning systems and district heating/cooling systems in the purpose of reduce frictional drag and save the pumping power for circulating the water in the system. It is generally accepted that drag-reduction is associated with the elasticity of network structures composed of rod-like micelles of surfactant. Our research group have been continuing the fundamental study on the non-Newtonian fluid flow at high Reynolds number to clarify the mechanism of drag reduction by surfactant additives. In this report, recent result of flow diagnostics by PIV (particle image velocimetry) and analysis by direct numerical simulation (DNS) and Brownian dynamics simulation (BDS) will be presented. The application of drag reduction will be also introduced.
