Dr. Kwun is an experimental physicist with experience in the fields of nondestructive evaluation (NDE), magnetics, ultrasonics, nonlinear effects, and solid-state low-temperature physics.
Since coming to Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in 1980, Dr. Kwun has been engaged primarily in the application of ultrasonics and magnetics to special NDE problems such as measurements of residual stresses in ferromagnetic materials and global inspection of piping, tubing, and steel cables. His research on stress measurements led to the development of two methods called magnetically induced velocity charges (MIVC) for ultrasonic waves and nonlinear harmonics (NLH). Both methods have been used for various applications such as pipeline stress measurements, welding stress measurements, and torque measurements in a rotating shaft.
For long-range global guided-wave inspection of structures such as piping, tubing, cables, and plates, Dr. Kwun has developed a technology called the magnetostrictive sensor (MsS) for which thirteen patents have been awarded with several others pending. Following a successful development of fieldable MsS instrument in 1998, the MsS technology is being commercialized for piping and tubing inspection in processing plants (such as refinery and chemical plants). Application of the MsS technology for plate-like structures such as large storage tanks and metallic pressure boundaries in nuclear containments is ongoing together with the development of thin MsS probes for long-term active structural health monitoring of structures such as aircrafts, ships, offshore platforms, and highway bridges.
In addition to applications to plant piping inspection, Dr. Kwun is active in applying the MsS to other areas such as automotive crash detection, automotive engine condition monitoring, vibration monitoring, acoustic emission detection, and noncontact torque sensing.
