Abstract
We present the concept of digital microfluidics a new paradigm in pumping and manipulating liquids and the technologies being developed to implement the concept in microdevices. Recently, our group has reported how to create, drive, divide, or merge droplets, all using electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) actuation. EWOD is an actuation mechanism based on electrical control of a surface wettability to aqueous liquids with excellent energy efficiency. With these four basic fluidic functions on individual droplets in hand, we are addressing the next major challenge: how to reduce the driving voltage, how to drive droplets on an NxM grid, and how to accomplish efficient mixing in microscale. The results demonstrates driving voltages as low as 15 V, droplet speed as fast as 250 mm/s, travel on a arbitrary path on an NxM grid without calling for complications in fabrication, and enhancement of mixing by two orders of magnitudes.

Chang-Jin "CJ" Kimreceived the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991 and joined the faculty at UCLA in 1993. He received the B.S. from Seoul National University and M.S. from Iowa State University along with the Graduate Research Excellence Award. His research is in MEMS with a recent focus on the use of surface tension and Nanotechnology. Prof. Kim is the recipient of the 1995 TRW Outstanding Young Teacher Award, 1997 NSF CAREER Award, and 2002 SmallTalk Award. Currently Prof. Kim is serving in the California NanoSystems Institute, in the U.S. Army Science Board, in the Executive Committee of ASME MEMS Subdivision, Program Committee for 2003 IEEE Conference on MEMS, and as a Subject Editor for the IEEE/ASME Journal of MEMS.
